Berniece Conrad Obituary

Berniece Elizabeth (Haverstock) Conrad, 97, died peacefully at her home near Milltown, Indiana after a long battle of dementia on Saturday, October 29, 2022.  Born Berniece Elizabeth Sprinkle on July 13, 1925, in Grantsburg, Indiana, the only child of Frank and Esther Sprinkle.  Berniece graduated from Marengo High School in 1943.  Soon after graduation, she left Marengo relocating to Indianapolis to attend Nursing School at Methodist Hospital.  After becoming an RN, Berniece worked at Methodist Hospital as a surgery nurse, meeting her first husband, Roger W. Haverstock, Sr. in Indianapolis.

Roger and Berniece were married in Indianapolis on October 15, 1950, at the East 10th Street Methodist Church.  Later that year, relocating to LaPorte, Indiana where the couple had four of their five children.  In 1957 the couple relocated to South Bend, Indiana where they had their fifth child.

In 1963, the family relocated to Berniece’s childhood home of Marengo, where the couple purchased a funeral home, thus starting the Haverstock Funeral Home in Marengo, Indiana.  After the youngest of the Haverstock children started school, Berniece went back to work for Crawford County as the Home Health Nurse checking on senior citizens county wide until funding ran out.  At that time, Berniece went to work for the Harrison County Hospital as an RN, retiring from the hospital as the head of Nursing in 1990.

In early 1995, Berniece reconnected with Dr. Robert Conrad from Warsaw, Indiana.  The two of them grew up as neighbors in Marengo, lost close contact after high school, and on July 16, 1995, were married in Marengo at the United Methodist Church.  The couple then built a home on Speed Road near Milltown, Indiana waving to everyone from the front porch, as they would drive by.

Berniece was a devoted mother to her four sons, Michael, Jeffrey, Roger, Jr., and Thomas.  She was also a loving grandmother of nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.  Berniece was married to both Roger W. Haverstock, Sr. and Dr. Robert Conrad each for 25 years.  She was preceded in death by her first child, Hope Elizabeth, her parents Frank and Esther Sprinkle, her first husband Roger W. Haverstock, Sr., her grandson Kyle W. Haverstock and her second husband Dr. Robert Conrad.

Survived by her four sons Michael (Mona), Jeffrey, Roger Jr. (Karen), and Thomas, eight grandchildren Nicholas Haverstock, Brandon Haverstock (Sara), Jamie Haney (Devon), Whitney Haverstock, Hope Haverstock, Bianca Sakel (Reid), MaKayla Haverstock, and Tiffany Adkins, and nine great-grandchildren Lucas Haverstock, Scarlett Haney, Paige Beauchamp, Deacon Haverstock, Silas Haverstock, Maxwell Sakel, Mila Haney, Griffin Haverstock, and Avery Sakel.

Berniece had a long career of nursing being the neighborhood nurse and anyone in Marengo that needed help, she was there.  She cherished her years at Methodist Hospital and the lifelong friendships she had with her fellow nurses.  She was also a lifetime member of the Marengo United Methodist Church, and a member of the Marengo Order of the Eastern Star, being the worthy matron more than once over the years.
