Earl Mills Obituary

Earl Mills, 94, of Depauw, Indiana died on December 21, 2023 at Park Terrace Healthcare Center in Louisville, Kentucky.  Earl was born on September 22, 1929 to the late Charles Edward and Grace (Austin) Mills south of Milltown, Indiana (Harrison County).  He was the 5th child, with five more brothers and a sister still to come.

Earl (known also as G.P. by some of us) is survived by his daughter, Earlene and his son-in-law Richard Haeseley (who he taught to farm).

His three grandsons grew up a short jog from Earl’s house in Depauw.  Ryan Haeseley (Mike) of New Richmond, Ohio, Jonathan Haeseley (Rachel) of Louisville, Kentucky, and Kyle Haeseley (Kate) of Elizabeth, Indiana.

G.P. had three great-grandchildren:  Mary [3], Julian [2.75], and Jesse [.75] all Haeseley’s.  Earl’s remaining sibling, Reba McFarland lives in Greenwood, Indiana.

There was a special friend in Earl’s last years, Charlotte Dunn who resides in Depauw.

Lot of nieces and nephews are still in his life, which he truly appreciated.  We know this because he bragged about their visits.

People that have gone before him, besides his parents, his wife of many years Mary Winn Mills and eight brothers and sisters that died previously :  Kenneth, Ruth, Madeline, Cecil, Glendon, Eugene, Charles Owen, and Ronald.

About Earl Mills…we think we can say he had a good life…it started out very poor..but early he learned how to live.  He was well read but he would only admit to a 3rd grade education [probably when he quit listening in class.]  The man was cutting up [joking] with hospital staff till the very end.  He was doing math within seconds that we had to use pencil and paper to determine the answer [last week].

He was happy man and a successful person in a lot of ways.  But it wasn’t easy…Earl was a TV repairman, a barber, an insurance salesman [hospitalization].  He owned a gas station…maybe with an adjacent car lot.  Oh, there was an egg route [like a milkman, only eggs].  But what he really was, was being a farmer.  Always he had a few calves and a few acres[that was what he really loved].

So besides sweating all day cutting wood, or holding a toddler on either side while he mashed potatoes [he was a good cook], he was also a supportive spouse…proud and gracious…what more can you ask for?
