Melvin Seibert Obituary

Melvin Ray Seibert, 82, passed from this life on February 23, 2025 at Core Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Bedford, Indiana.  He was born on June 11, 1942 in Huntingburg, Indiana to the late Edward E. and Edna Lorene (Polen) Seibert Johnson.

Ray grew up in Taswell, Indiana and greatly enjoyed spending endless days in the trees and woods on adventures.  As a teenager, he lived in Monrovia, California.  It was there that Ray entered the United States Marine Corps.  He was stationed in the US and Okinawa, Japan with duties as an assault tank man, MCI Tactics of Marine Rifle Squad and Director of Arms.  He received many medals including sharp shooter (pistol and rifle) and for good conduct.

Ray returned to English, Indiana and went to work at Colgate.  He later worked with the excise police force in Evansville and Terre Haute, Indiana and later for Midwestern Insurance.  He was very effective in the covert operations as an excise.  He then went to work at the Bemis Factory in Terre Haute, from which he spent many dedicated years and later retired.  Ray loved spending time with his children, then on the arrival of grandchildren and of course his southern Indiana family.  Ray would come from the big city to the hills of southern Indiana to mushroom hunt with his daughter Dena and son Kyle and often with his brother Wendell Seibert and brother in law Bill Sherron and nephew in laws.  This very often included good ole squirrel hunting.  With his military background, he was highly effective in his shooting accuracy, especially at the shooting matches he attended with his brother Wendell and brother in law Bill Sherron.

He taught his children, brothers, sisters, nieces, and nephews valuable lessons of life along his journey of life.

Ray was a huge supporter of football and enjoyed old time westerns, playing cards, music, and walking.  He read detective articles.  He enjoyed his granddaughters visits and spent personal time with them, watching favorite shows and feeding them ice cream.  He was a very social person and always brought fun and laughter into the lives of family and friends.  He supported his local VFW Post #972 in Terre Haute, Indiana.  His famous quote was “everybody loves Raymond” as a humorous reference to himself.

Ray came to live in Southern Indiana towards the end of his life.  He enjoyed being around his family so dearly and would often share his gratitude, along with reflecting how he greatly missed his brother Wendell.

He prayed with many who would visit and accepted Jesus Christ into his heart and life.

He is survived by his daughter Dena Rae Seibert Angevin and son in law Benoit, granddaughters, Mathilde and Elisa of Warsaw, Poland; his son Kyle Seibert of Peoria, Illinois; siblings, Joyce A. Sherron of Grantsburg, Indiana, Shirley M. Gilliland of English, Indiana, Patricia G. Lane of Logansport, Indiana, Rita J. Smith (John) of Sulphur, Indiana and Rex M. Johnson (Christina) of Princeton, Indiana and a multitude of nieces, nephews, and cousins with a very special recognition to niece and friend, Tammy M. Jellison.

He is preceded in death by his parents; step father, Cleon Johnson; a brother, Wendell L. Seibert and sister, Sharon C. Wilson; a step brother, Glenn C. Johnson; special friends, Herb and Dorothy, who were a great influence in his younger years and his Uncle Densil and Aunt Mable Polen who made a lasting impression of faith on his heart.
